Look around your bedroom, and it is likely that you will see a wide assortment of technology, such as a television, cell phone, computer, or tablet. All of these devices can be incredibly convenient and fun, but technology can actually have a negative effect on your sleep. The more gadgets you have in your room, the more disrupted your sleep is likely to be. A lack of sleep can cause an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes, as well as exacerbate existing issues such as depression and anxiety, and increase feelings of stress. Because of this, it is pivotal to get all those devices out of your room if you would like to get a good night’s sleep.
The light that electronic devices emit, whether TV, phone, or tablet, can interfere with the way our brain perceives that it is time to sleep. Using computers and smartphones while in bed prior to sleeping can actually contribute to instances of insomnia and more frequent night waking. Melatonin, a hormone that helps tell our bodies it is nighttime, is suppressed when we are exposed to light at night. This melatonin suppression throws off our body’s natural clock, so that when our eyes see light, our brain believes it is time to stay awake.

Video games can also have a negative effect on sleep. Not only does the light from the screen interrupt the body’s production of melatonin, playing a video game prior to bedtime can raise your heart rate and your stress levels, and it can make your mind too active to quiet down quickly. Playing video games for an extended amount of time before bed can also wreck havoc on the quality of sleep you do receive once you finally nod off.
In order to get a good night’s sleep, avoid electronics at least an hour before bedtime, keep electronics out of your bedroom if you can, and silence everything on your phone except your alarm if you use it. You will be catching those elusive zzz’s before you know it.
